A Life Like Jazz
So, I'm sitting here in my favorite Starbucks during the 4th rainy day in a row here in Myrtle Beach contemplating existence over a cup of coffee. The life of a musician, regardless what genre, is best lived like a jazz chart. If you want to be successful, you have to have structure, a goal. There have to be landing points, and cadences that you arrive at occasionally, but the rest is space in which you can create the life you want.
My day, week, month, year, and life are constantly filled with colorful people, weird experiences, new locations, as well as constant change. I know what I want to do, who I am, and where I would like to get to. But the process, though seemingly random, has a purpose and a goal. Whenever I'm working for a pop artist, directing a band in a musical, or playing some jazz piano somewhere, it's the color and change that I love about what I do. It's never the same, but always similar. Never an office, but familiar places. And the variety never gets old.
Being a musician is difficult at times, but I wouldn't change it for anything. The challenges of my chosen path are many, but they are worth overcoming. When I reach the end of my time here on earth, I want to be able to look back and see a great story, and really know what it is to live a full life. Until then, it will be an adventure!
